About This Paper

Biblical scholars through the centuries have promoted views on 1 Timothy 2:9-15 that conflict with other biblical texts and oppress women. A closer look at this disputed text reveals terms and themes that are rare in antiquity.

Literary evidence has surfaced that has been largely overlooked in New Testament scholarship, Ephesiaca by Xenophon of Ephesus, which employs the same rare language. It brings Artemis into view and aids readers in locating the possible function of this text within its context.

When we examine Ephesiaca alongside 1 Timothy 2:9-15, an interpretive reading of the text emerges that releases women from oppression and calls them to new behaviors as they shift their allegiance and service from Artemis to our Lord Jesus Christ.

Ephesiaca, recently dated to the mid-first century CE, brings to life what is known from ancient sources about the social setting and cultural rules of the wealthy in Ephesus and provides details that enhance our knowledge of life and society in that place and time.

In this paper, we explore this socio-rhetorical research in three sections: (1) a brief rundown of the unresolved interpretive issues linked to 1 Timothy 2:9-15, (2) exposition the contribution of Xenophon of Ephesus to the scholarly conversation, and (3) a summary of possible applications.
